German Immersion Outdoor Science Camp from June 29-July 4, 2014

February 28, 2014 by Cornelia 1 Comment

IMG_6908

It might seem a bit early to think of summer just yet. But hey, we are already at the end of February and I remember 2014 just having started!!

For everyone planning for summer 2014, and especially looking into summer activities for their children, here is a great camp for kids. Organized by The German American School Association of SoCal  this year’s camp will be at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center in Orange.  Having taken place in Big Bear last year, this camp has become very popular since its inception three years ago. For 6 days and 5 nights the children will be immersed in a complete German language environment. They will visit a geode, gold and coal mine under the guidance of a geologist; can experience special activities such as zip lining and archery, or just swim and slide down a 136 ft. water slide!

Activities such as crafting, baking, fishing and nature hikes will all be conducted in German. So if you don’t plan on going to visit family in Germany, Austria or Switzerland this year, have your children participate in a German Immersion Camp instead, and let them make German friends over cosy campfires right here in California.

The GASA German Immersion Outdoor Science Camp is for ages 7-16 and will take place at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center in Orange, CA, from June 29-July4, 2014.

Cost for the Camp is $575.00. Sign up by March 15, to receive an early bird discount!

To sign up or find out more about it please call the GASA office at (562) 693-0223 or email at office@GASAschool.org

Memories of a Fun German Summer Camp at Big Bear Lake

September 24, 2013 by Cornelia 2 Comments

IMG_6908

Though Summer is officially over we wanted to take a last glance back at it and share a short review of one of Southern California’s successful German summer camps.

Organized by GASA, the German American School Association the German Summer Camp at Big Bear Lake is now in its second year. The camp site is close to Los Angeles and has made itself a name: Fun, adventure and camaraderie is what comes to mind for many when remembering their fun six days at Big Bear Lake.

The motto of this year’s camp was: “Die alten Germanen” – “The Teutons”, explaining the life of our Germanic Ancestors. To give the children a better understanding of what to expect of the week’s  camp, everyone was introduced to the topic with a movie : „Hermann, der Cherusker – die Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald.“

54 students from seven to fifteen years of age and from all over California, some kletterwandeven from Arizona and Minnesota, arrived on a Sunday afternoon, and were excitedly looking forward to the variety of activities awaiting them.  The camp’s mornings were dedicated to sports activities like fishing, soccer, golf, rock climbing and much more, after which the students had the choice of participating in baking, dancing or crafts classes.

Every class covered not only the fun factor but included also teaching the children about life in the Germanic ages, while even acquiring special skills of those times. By the end of the camp for example, every child had either built a sword or learned how to weave a basket, and all of them knew how to write their name in runes. Teaching of the runes alphabet was part of the curriculum in the afternoon, when the children concentrated on the history of their Germanic ancestors.

The day before last at summer camp all students and teachers went on a 1,5 milegermanen nature hike together before returning to a cozy evening around the fire.

And then the last day of camp was suddenly here, and all the week’s learning culminated in a final celebration, the exciting highlight of the camp: A fantastic interpretation of the “Die Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald” presented at the open-air theatre stage and every child had an active part in it.

An exciting summer camp had now come to an end, and everyone settled down for a last get together watching the sunset over Big Bear lake. While singing songs, roasting marshmallows and making smor’s, phone numbers were exchanged, and plans were made for next year’s adventure at Big Bear’s German Camp.

New Highlight on L.A.’s Museums Scene – The New Natural History Museum

.

Exciting New Additions Mark Los Angeles Natural History Museum’s Centennial

My family and I found a new hang out in Los Angeles: The Natural History Museum ! Just a few weeks ago the museum opened doors to its brand new SAMSUNGNature Lab and Nature Gardens and, wow!, are we impressed! My kids spent hours just in the Nature Lab exhibit alone. Here visitors can find out more about L.A.’s wildlife that’s starting right outside our front door, or should we say right inside our own homes, speaking of silverfish, cockroaches, bed bugs , etc. . Visitors learn about which foreign species (be it animal or plants) took over the habitat from its California native counterparts making life for those unbearable and sometimes pushing them even close to extinction, like in the case of the Western Pond Turtle which is being pushed out of its habitat by the Red-Eared Slider Turtle.

SAMSUNGAll this information is delightfully packaged into little messages on walls and displays, but one can find more in-depth articles as well. Visitors can observe the behavior of live animals in glass terrariums, like native rats, spiders, lizards, snakes and more while interactive games and movies invite to get deeper into the subject.  So much information everywhere, but so perfectly displayed and in so many appealing variations that one doesn’t get tired of exploring. The different information bites entice the viewer to read on, keep on listening and wanting to find out more!

Throughout the museum visitors get reminded to take an active role in discovering nature all around them, and get encouraged to share their new findings via email directly with NHM scientists.

Did you know we had parrots flying around L.A. and OC? Well, today I learned that the Red Crowned Parrot has in fact become LA’s most common wild parrot!! Another interesting fact I came across was that black widows are slowly being SAMSUNGreplaced by their grayish looking cousins, the Brown Widow, which luckily are not as poisonous as the California native black one. In 2003 school children in Los Angeles discovered the first brown widow in L.A. . And so on…

.

A new science experience for the 21st century minds of young and old

Having covered the California Science Center for CaliforniaGermans, which is right next door to the Natural History Museum, as well as San Francisco’s Exploratorium (before its move to the Pier this year) and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, I must say that this is an addition Los Angeles’ museums world can be so proud of.

Designed by German architect Fabian Kremkus the new addition to the Natural History Museum also features a beautiful Nature Garden, which unfortunately we ran out of time to explore today. We will have to tame our curiosity and wait for next time to visit the “Listening Tree”, where one can hear the water flowing inside the trees!  However, we did take a tour of the little Butterfly Pavilion, SAMSUNGwhere kids can experience various kinds of butterflies flying around them and witness their different stages of development. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff is right there to answer all kinds of questions one might have.

.

Dinosaur Galore in Dinosaur Hall

Should you have enough time to treat your kids to the extraordinary dinosaur exhibit, definitely do so. Completely redone, the exhibit opened in 2011 and is impressive. Yes, there is a lot to read, but if you like to dig in to the whole history, this is the way to do it. The complete dinosaur age is exceptionally well explained mailand recounted. This being said, even younger kids will love to spend time here since there is simply so much to see.  And just envisioning those huge animals roaming about the same ‘habitat’ that we are walking on today, is an adventure in itself.

With the architectural design of its new additions the Natural History Museum also supports Los Angeles’ urban development with a new entrance (the Otis Booth Pavilion) right on the side of Exposition Boulevard and the light-rail Expo Line, which shall entice pedestrians to stop by the museum.

All in all the Los Angeles Natural History Museum has become a gem of a museum, one you don’t want to miss! It’s inspiring, and with its innovative design so ready to take on 21st century audiences.

Don’t miss putting it on your summer To Do list !

Upcoming new exhibits and events at the NHM:

  • “Becoming Los Angeles” exhibit covering 500 years of LA history, opens on July 14. LA.
  • A Friday night film series of L.A.centric movies starts July 13.

German Language Immersion in the Summer – German Summer Camps In CA

March 20, 2013 by Cornelia 2 Comments

Tivoli Rainbow Garden Preschool
.

Spring is just starting today and we are already  talking summer! In fact now is the perfect time to think about a camp that your child will not only enjoy but that will help him/her strengthen his German language skills during summer!

Growing up in a multilingual family offers many advantages, but often it can also be challenging, especially in regards to the second language, the language that is not spoken as frequently. To help your child with this process experts recommend to find different ways to get him/her immersed into the non-dominant language as often as possible. This gives the child the opportunity to connect to that language and become more familiar with its usage as well as its particular culture.

In the case of many CaliforniaGermans this ‘second’ language is German. Once children are in school they speak English for most of the day. Back home again they might hear some German, and if lucky also speak some German with their mother or father.

Spend Summer in California Attending a German Immersion Camp

Many expat families plan on going back  home to Germany, Austria or Switzerland during the summer months to visit family. This of course proofs to be the perfect solution for giving your children a firsthand experience and immersion into the German language and culture. But that’s of course a perfect scenario.  What if work or other factors don’t allow for a European vacation?

Wouldn’t a German language camp in somewhat close vicinity to your home in CA be a great alternative for your child to still benefit from speaking, hearing and learning German all day long for the duration of a fun summer camp?

That’s exactly what we thought and put together this compilation of German Language Immersion Summer Camps throughout California. We hope you find the perfect one for your child and would love to get your feedback on your experience.

‘Kiepenkasper’ – Uwe Spillmann’s Puppetshow Visits San Diego

January 16, 2013 by Cornelia 1 Comment

Kiepenkasper - Uwe Spillmann‘Puppentheater auf zwei Beinen kommt nach San Diego’

Famous German hand puppet player Uwe Spillmann will be on US tour and has planned to make a stop in San Diego to enchant the California-German audience.

‘Kiepenkasper‘ keeps fascinating his audience of young and old since 15 years. He is present at all kinds of events and ‘Kasper’ has traveled the world! Mexico, Australia, Russia, and even Namibia as well as many other countries around the world are familiar with him and enjoy his shows.

January 2013 is the month to get a chance to meet Kiepenkasper in person right here in Southern California. Mr. Spillmann has agreed to an Open Air Performance at the Balboa Park near the House of Germany (part of the International Cottages).

Uwe Spillmann is writing his own scripts for his ‘Kiepenkasper’. Based on traditional puppet shows (‘Kasperltheater’) his performances bring a breeze of fresh air into this old tradition of puppet play. He usually performs two plays, each lasting about 20 minutes. During the break he entertains children and adults alike with tricks and exotic musical instruments.

Enjoy a performance on January 23 at 3pm at Balboa Park near the House of Germany in San Diego !
